Payroll Challenges

Payroll that stops being a monthly source of risk.

Payroll problems are rarely about one bad cycle. They are usually the result of a process that depends on memory, a system that was never fully configured, or a team stretched too thin to catch errors before employees do.

What this looks like

What tends to be going wrong

Different symptoms, usually the same underlying causes.

Corrections and off-cycle runs have become routine rather than exceptional.

Agency notices arrive and nobody is certain what triggered them or who is resolving them.

The process lives in one person’s head, with no documentation and no backup.

Expansion into new states added complexity that the current process was never designed for.

How we help

Three ways to fix it

The right route depends on whether the problem is capacity, process, or system configuration.

Capacity

Managed Payroll

Skillcloud runs the cycle — processing, reconciliation, reporting, and support — inside the platform you already use.

Process

Payroll consulting

A defined project to fix what is structurally broken: workflow, controls, documentation, and reconciliation practice.

System

HRIS Optimization

Where the root cause is configuration, the fix is in the system — earnings and deduction setup, workflows, and reporting.

What's Included

What payroll support covers

Scope depends on the route, but the work below is what organizations most often hand over or ask us to fix.

  • Payroll processing and gross-to-net review on your schedule
  • Pre-processing collection of new hires, terminations, and changes
  • Reconciliation before submission rather than corrections afterward
  • Deduction, garnishment, and levy administration
  • Tax and agency notice handling and resolution
  • Multi-state payroll complexity and jurisdiction rules
  • General ledger and post-payroll reporting for finance
  • Documentation of the process so it survives a departure

Signals it is time to get help

  • Recurring corrections or off-cycle runs
  • Unresolved agency notices
  • A single point of failure on the team
  • New states added without process change
  • Finance and payroll numbers that do not reconcile

How it works

Getting started

1

Payroll review

We look at how the cycle actually runs today, including the steps that are not written down.

2

Root cause

We separate capacity problems from process problems from system configuration problems.

3

Fix or take over

Either we correct the process and hand it back, or we run it going forward.

4

Controls in place

Reconciliation and review steps are documented so accuracy does not depend on one person.

FAQ

Common questions

No. We are technology-agnostic and work inside the platform you already own. If the platform genuinely is the problem we will say so, but replacing a system is a much larger decision than fixing a process and we do not lead with it.
We handle notice review and resolution as part of payroll support. Registration in new jurisdictions is a separate scope question — talk to us about the specific states involved and we will be straight about what we do and do not take on.
No. Under a PEO you become a co-employer and your employees move onto their tax IDs. With Skillcloud you remain the employer of record, your payroll stays yours, and you keep your platform and vendor relationships.
That is common — quarter close, year end, and open enrollment create predictable strain. Project-based consulting support handles seasonal load without committing to an ongoing arrangement.
Multi-state complexity is one of the most common reasons organizations reach out. We work through the jurisdiction rules that apply to where your employees actually work, and build the process around them rather than around a single home state.
